Remind the Premier that Abortion is Health Care

Dear Premier Minns,
In NSW, it's been five years since abortion was removed from the Crimes Act and regulated as health care, as it should be. 
It was a critical first step to ensuring safe and legal abortion is accessible across NSW. But since then, far too little has changed. People who need an abortion are still impeded by cost, stigma, and geography.
Abortion should not only be legal but also safe, free, and accessible across NSW. It can and should be embedded within mainstream public health services.
Thank you for your recent commitment in the Parliament that “in most cases, medical or surgical abortions are provided in primary care or private practice settings, but of course we recognise that the public hospital network has a role to play here. That will be fully funded, and the services will be available.” This is important and appreciated leadership - and a commitment that we will hold you to.
At least first-trimester surgical abortions should be available at every public hospital in NSW that has the capability to provide reproductive health services. With the pressure that the public health system is under, this needs funding and support for front-line staff.
This will not only address the postcode lottery but also provide a level of privacy for people who may not feel comfortable or safe accessing a standalone reproductive health service.
The Abortion Law Reform Amendment (Health Care Access) Bill 2025 would update the legislation to remove onerous and bureaucratic mandatory reporting requirements, allow nurses and midwives with appropriate training to prescribe medical abortions (as permitted by the TGA), and to ensure that conscientious objection provisions can’t be weaponised by institutions or departments to impede access to health care. We urge you to support the passage of this legislative reform.
We saw two cases of hospital abortion services being restricted within just a fortnight at both Orange and Queanbeyan Hospitals. The Health Minister’s intervention to address this is greatly appreciated. But an ad hoc approach won’t fix the problem - it can and will keep happening without legislative change and service funding.
My wish for 2025 is that you follow through on your commitment to fund abortion care in NSW public hospitals - and update the legislation to improve access to abortion services.
