Microplastics need urgent action
Microplastics are not a micro issue. They’re having a profound impact on the environment and our health.
Plastic, once produced, never goes away; it only breaks into smaller and smaller pieces.
Microplastics are being found in breast milk, and in human brains during autopsy because we are all regularly ingesting and inhaling plastic.
Microplastics have been linked to endocrine disruption, weight gain, insulin resistance, decreased reproductive health and cancer. They are also having significant impacts on animals and marine ecosystems, with more and more concerning research emerging.
While we can all make an effort to use less plastic, the real responsibility for this mess lies with the corporations producing it.
The state government must take more urgent action to reduce plastic production at its source.
