PALLIATIVE CARE SERVICES BELONG AT DAVID BERRY

David Berry Hospital is a much loved historical facility that opened its doors 115 years ago. It provides palliative care and rehabilitation services in a leafy spot where it's easy for friends and family to come and visit their loved ones. It’s a place for locals to die with dignity and peace.

Those services are being relocated to the redeveloped Shoalhaven Hospital. The NSW government has repeatedly argued that palliative care services will be enhanced at the new facility.

However, the Greens stand with the local community who believe that their loved ones deserve to die in their local community at a beautiful facility like David Berry. As a doctor, I know the value of people being able to die in a place that feels close to home and close to nature. Contrary to the government’s sentiment, there is not a need for proximity to acute medical services for people who are dying.

Watch me question the Minister about that here

People like palliative care advocate and past palliative care specialist at David Berry Hospital, Dr Phil Lee have made the sensible argument that David Berry could provide sub-acute units even after the new Shoalhaven Hospital facility opens.

Regardless of what happens with clinical services at David Berry, the site must remain in public hands and be used for public good. This site was gifted to the community and should be theirs for good. Fortunately, the government has indicated it will not be selling off the site and that it will be consulting with the community on its future use.

The Greens are committed to holding the government to account on delivering the best possible care for the communities who use and love David Berry Hospital.
